  How much does projection mapping cost?

  The cost of projection mapping varies widely depending on factors such as the scale (projection surface area and distance, projector specifications and quantity), duration (a one–to–three-day event, a multi-week run, or a permanent installation), creative complexity (the level of detail in the 3D building model, the volume of 3DCG/2D animation, total content length, the proportion of original content, original music or sound design, the use of moving lights, lasers, or smoke effects), operation (number of engineers and operators for video, sound, and lighting, and the required operating days), as well as the overall event operation (number of security and operations staff required, quantity of footlights and cable mats).
  In general, costs range from several million to several tens of millions of yen.
  
  For example:
  
  The relatively small-scale, short-run “Iwasaki Castle Tenshukaku Projection Mapping” (three days) cost approximately 20 million yen (tax included).
  
  The long-running and large-scale “National Treasure Matsumoto Castle Tenshu Projection Mapping” (approximately two months), which required numerous projectors and a fully automated operating system, cost around 58.5 million yen (tax included).
  
  The large-scale “Anabuki Arena Kagawa Projection Mapping” (three days), which used more than ten ultra-high-brightness projectors weighing over 100 kg and required four 10-meter towers and a large security and operations team, cost approximately 90 million yen (tax included).
  
  The short-term but multi-projector “Edo Castle Outer Moat Projection Mapping” under the Water City Edo restoration project (four days) cost about 22 million yen (tax included).
  
  These projection mapping projects were provided as total packages, including not only design, production, installation, and operation, but also poster visuals, media PR, and SNS advertising.
  
  For smaller or shorter events, there are cases ranging from approximately 5 to 15 million yen (excluding tax). There are also examples—such as “Light Up Macao 2024 – Macao Science Center Projection Mapping” and “TOKYO Night & Light – City of Water: Edo Outer Moat” at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building—where the organizer supplied all equipment and operations, and HITOHATA provided content production only.
  
  In many cases, local governments have realized these projects through subsidies from the Japan Tourism Agency or the Agency for Cultural Affairs. HITOHATA also supports municipalities, DMOs, and tourism associations in acquiring such subsidies.

  Where can projection mapping be implemented? Is there an ideal season for it?

  Projection mapping can be staged in a wide range of locations, including cultural heritage sites such as castles and temples, public facilities, arenas, natural environments like cliffs and waterfalls, museums, and open plazas near train stations.
  
  For outdoor projection mapping, the show must take place at night. Venues that are naturally dark are ideal, and if there are streetlights, they should be able to be switched off.
  Because projection mapping depends heavily on sunset times, shows can start earlier—around 5:00 p.m. or 6:00 p.m.—during autumn and winter when the sun sets early. In summer, when sunset is later, shows typically begin after 7:00 p.m. As a guideline, the ideal start time is about 30 minutes after local sunset.
  
  In bright commercial districts or building façades surrounded by artificial light, ultra-high-brightness projectors and a larger number of units are required, which significantly increases costs and may limit feasibility.
  
  Suitable venues also need to meet several conditions:
  • A location away from dense residential areas to allow for sound output
  • A space large enough for many visitors to view the show at once
  • Good transportation access
  • For regional areas, ample parking including temporary parking lots
  
  Projection mapping across roads or onto buildings that span public roadways may be difficult to realize due to safety and traffic considerations.
  
  When selecting a projection surface, factors such as the building’s uniqueness, story, cultural value, and its potential to attract visitors from outside the region are key. For example, historical or culturally significant sites—such as castles, temples, and heritage buildings—tend to draw more visitors compared to ordinary municipal buildings or commercial facilities.
  
  Additionally, projection mapping on glass surfaces requires blinds or curtains to be closed, or interior film to be applied, because the image would otherwise pass through the glass.
  

• Q

  How much preparation time is required to stage a projection mapping show?

  The required preparation time varies greatly depending on the venue conditions and the scope of the production. Smaller-scale projects typically require around 3 to 6 months, while larger-scale productions may need 6 months to a year.
  
  Because coordination with multiple parties is essential—including the venue owner, national and local government agencies, police, and fire departments—and because confirmation of regulations such as outdoor advertising ordinances, landscape ordinances, and aviation laws is required, we recommend planning with a generous timeline.
  
  When we receive a request for projection mapping, we begin by assessing whether the venue conditions (projection surface, surrounding brightness, etc.) are suitable. We then work with you to determine the scale, duration, and operational plan according to your budget. In parallel, the organizer will proceed with venue coordination, regulatory checks, and operational considerations, and we will move forward together.
  
  If a local government is considering the use of subsidies from the Japan Tourism Agency or the Agency for Cultural Affairs, it is advisable to prepare multiple scale and duration options in advance, depending on whether the subsidy is approved. It is also possible to carry out the project only if the subsidy is granted, within the eligible implementation period.

  I would like to host the Ukiyoe Immersive Art Exhibition or the YOKAI Immersive Experience Exhibition. Are there any venue requirements? Also, how much does it cost?

  The Ukiyoe Immersive Art Exhibition and the YOKAI Immersive Experience Exhibition typically require a venue of approximately 600㎡ to 2,000㎡ with a ceiling height of 3.5 meters or higher. Including installation and construction periods, the venue should ideally be available for about two to six months.
  
  In addition to the content licensing fee, the package includes projector and equipment rental, scenic fabrication costs, transportation of exhibits, spatial design, system engineering, exhibition insurance, staff travel expenses, website operation costs, and basic promotional expenses.
  Additional costs such as venue rental, electricity, heating and cooling, construction, installation of projectors and audio equipment, power supply work, on-site operations, and extended promotional activities will also be required.
  
  We can customize spatial design and content according to the venue conditions and, if desired, incorporate elements unique to the host region.
  
  Operational structures such as hosting and funding schemes can be adjusted based on local needs.

  Is it possible to create an original immersive art museum project? Also, how much does it cost?

  Yes. We can produce large-scale immersive art museum projects ranging from approximately 600 to 2,000 square meters, such as “Ukiyoe Immersive Art Exhibition” and “YOKAI Immersive Experience Exhibition”.
  We can also develop even larger permanent facilities, as well as medium-scale immersive projects of around 200 to 500 square meters that can be integrated into existing exhibition packages, such as HOKUSAI IMMERSIVE ART in the Utagawa Kuniyoshi Exhibition and DIGITAL ART FOREST: Insect Paradise in the Fabre Insect Exhibition.
