HITOHATA,INC. produced “YOKAI Immersive Experience Exhibition TOKYO – Imagination of Japan –,” which was held from Fri, Mar 27, 2026, to Sun, Jun 28, 2026 at Warehouse TERRADA G1 Bldg (6-4, Higashi-Shinagawa 2-chome, Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo). The event was organized by the YOKAI Immersive Experience Exhibition TOKYO Executive Committee (TV TOKYO, BS TV TOKYO, Nikkei, Jiji Press, HITOHATA, TV Aichi).
This event was the world’s first immersive digital art museum, allowing visitors to experience Japan’s proud tradition of yokai (supernatural creatures) through Edo and Meiji period artworks, including Hyakki Yagyō Emaki (Night Parade of One Hundred Demons), Hyaku Monogatari (One Hundred Ghost Stories), oni (demons), tengu (goblin-like beings), kappa (water spirits), and tsukumogami (animated household objects). These legendary creatures were brought to life through cutting-edge visual technology and immersive three-dimensional installations.
Born from the rich imagination of ancient Japanese myths and folklore, yokai have transcended time to captivate audiences worldwide. Their humorous and mysterious depictions in traditional paintings and caricatures were dynamically animated using 3DCG, projection mapping, and holographic screens, while three-dimensional sculptures recreated a realistic yokai world, making the experience even more immersive.
Additionally, with the cooperation of the Yokai Art Museum in Shodoshima and Japan’s first antiquarian book museum, Nishio City Iwase Bunko, the exhibition featured precious yokai paintings, caricatures, and art. Through detailed exhibits and explanations, visitors could uncover the cultural and historical roots of yokai and their influence on modern pop culture.
During the exhibition period, a participatory Hyakki Yagyō parade was also held, allowing visitors to walk alongside yokai in an immersive art space.
As a new form of art entertainment where visitors of all ages could enjoy, learn, and experience Japan’s renowned yokai culture, the exhibition welcomed more than 110,000 visitors during its run.

“YOKAI Immersive Experience Exhibition – Imagination of Japan –” is the world’s first immersive, experiential digital art museum project, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the world of yokai paintings, caricatures, and yokai art—created by various artists, primarily during the Edo and Meiji periods—through cutting-edge visual technology, spatial audio, and three-dimensional sculptures.
Yokai such as oni, tengu, kappa, and tsukumogami, born of Japan’s rich imagination, have captivated people’s hearts across the ages and today enjoy international popularity as a form of art and culture. This exhibition brings these yokai back to life in the modern era through dynamic 3D visual spaces and realistic three-dimensional sculptures, offering visitors a new form of art entertainment to experience firsthand.
Furthermore, with the cooperation of Japan’s first museum of rare books—the Iwase Bunko in Nishio City—and the Yokai Art Museum on Shodoshima, the exhibition sheds light on the cultural and historical background of yokai through valuable materials and commentary. We present this as an exhibition where visitors of all ages can “enjoy, learn, and experience” the charm of Japan’s renowned yokai culture.

“YOKAI”—Japan’s yokai, whose name is now becoming a universal term, are beings that captivate people across eras and national borders. In this exhibition, “YOKAI Immersive Experience Exhibition – Imagination of Japan –,” we aimed to reconstruct this yokai culture using cutting-edge immersive techniques, creating a “parallel world” in which everyone, from children to adults, can become fully immersed.
In producing the exhibition, we brought together a wide range of technologies—including visual techniques such as 3DCG animation, Live2D, holographic screens, and projection mapping, as well as spatial audio technology via a surround sound system, and the fusion of meticulously crafted three-dimensional sculptures with immersive staging—to breathe new life into two-dimensional yokai paintings, caricatures, and yokai art, transforming them into dynamic, immersive three-dimensional artworks for the modern era.
From parading alongside the yokai depicted in the “Hyakki Yagyō Emaki” scroll to searching for the elusive “tsukumogami” and experiencing the looming presence of the giant skeleton from Utagawa Kuniyoshi’s “The Haunted Old Palace at Sōma,” over 300 humorous yokai invite visitors into a world of “interactive yokai art.”
Furthermore, the exhibition goes beyond mere surprise; it conveys the essence of yokai culture by unraveling the cultural and historical context of these creatures—including the ancient Japanese myths and legends that form their backdrop—while also allowing visitors to explore in depth how yokai are connected to contemporary pop culture. We hope that by stepping into this “otherworld” and feeling a sense of closeness to the yokai, you will rediscover the richness of Japan’s yokai culture and creativity, of which the nation is so proud.
We hope that this exhibition—a culmination of the art, culture, and entertainment born of the Japanese imagination—will spark a new movement in yokai culture, and that the curiosity and imagination required to enjoy these otherworldly beings will contribute to peace.
