"Jodosan Daijuji Temple Projection Mapping 2025", produced by HITOHATA,INC., will be held at Daijuji Temple in Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture, from Fri, Jan, 17 to Sun, Jan, 19 2025. (Organizer: Okazaki City Nighttime Economy Promotion Council)

This event will feature projection mapping displays at Daijuji Temple, the family temple of the Matsudaira and Tokugawa Shogun families. The visuals will be inspired by cultural treasures such as the grand Sanmon Gate, a designated tangible cultural property of Aichi Prefecture, and the important cultural property Ohojo Shoheki-ga (wall paintings in the large reception hall), among others.

Additionally, the Ohojo reception hall and the ancestral tablets hall will be illuminated with enchanting lights, creating a mystical nighttime atmosphere. Visitors will also experience a special nighttime viewing, including 49 panels of the Ohojo Shoheki-ga along with 22 panels of high-resolution digital reproductions of significant cultural artifacts: 16 panels of Ita-e Chakushoku Sugito-e and 6 panels of Shohojo Sugito-e. These sliding door paintings, designated as important cultural properties, have not been publicly displayed for over 40 years.

In addition to the projection mapping and nighttime viewing, the event will feature:

• Illumination of the temple grounds, including the important cultural property Tahoto (pagoda).

• A special "Lantern Lighting Ceremony" held in the main hall.

• A culinary area offering local delicacies such as "Hatcho Miso Grilled Rice Balls" and "Tempura of Tai (Sea Bream)," allowing visitors to enjoy the unique food culture of Okazaki City and Daijuji Temple.

Outdoor projection mapping and illumination viewing are free of charge. Admission for the special nighttime viewing is ¥800 for adults, ¥500 for elementary and junior high school students, and free for preschool children. No prior reservation is required for either.

A premium tour, "Kiwami Daijuji – A Private Viewing of Cultural Treasures with Tokugawa Ieyasu's Favorite Cuisine and Digital Art" (advance reservation required at least 10 days prior), will also be offered. This paid tour includes lunch featuring "Ieyasu Homeland Cuisine," guided visits to Okazaki Castle and Daijuji Temple, and an exclusive pre-opening private viewing of the nighttime special exhibition.

Requests for Visitors

• When photographing or filming the projection mapping, please refrain from using flash, drones, or tripods for extended periods in the front row during crowded times. Additionally, continuous shutter sounds from burst mode may disturb others, so please either avoid using burst mode during busy times or enable silent shooting mode. Due to the rapid motion of the visuals, video recording is recommended for smartphones.

• When using a tripod for projection mapping photography, the camera height should not exceed the photographer’s head level, regardless of the viewing area (excluding official recording staff). Additionally, using ladders or any devices that do not maintain full contact with the ground is prohibited.

• Please note that staff and media may capture photos and videos during the event, and you may appear in these recordings.

• As viewing areas are limited, please cooperate with others and share space considerately.

• Some areas within the special nighttime viewing are prohibited for photography. Please observe the restrictions in these zones.

• Inside the venue, please follow staff instructions and move quietly.

• Wheelchair users will be guided by staff upon arrival at the venue.

• Please dispose of any trash, including waste from food and drinks in the food area, in the designated bins.

• Eating and drinking are not permitted inside the Main Hall, Ohojo, or in Ihai do Hall.

About Daijuji Temple

Daijuji Temple is a historically significant temple where Tokugawa Ieyasu, after his defeat at the Battle of Okehazama, fled and attempted to take his own life. It was here that the head priest imparted the teaching of “striving for peace,” leading Ieyasu to change his mind.

The Sanmon Gate, built by the third shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu, and the Somon Gate mark the starting point of a 3-kilometer straight line connecting Daijuji Temple and Okazaki Castle. Known as the “Vista Line,” this historic view has been preserved for approximately 370 years.

As the family temple of the Matsudaira and Tokugawa Shogun clans, Daijuji Temple was founded in 1475 (Bunmei 7) by Zen Master Seiyo Gutei at the request of Matsudaira Chikatada, the fourth head of the Matsudaira family.

The temple enshrines numerous culturally significant treasures, including: The graves of eight generations of the Matsudaira family, sliding door paintings (fusuma-e) by Reizei Tamechika, designated as Important Cultural Properties, memorial tablets of successive Tokugawa shoguns and a wooden statue of Tokugawa Ieyasu created when he was 73 years old.

The Tahoto Pagoda, designated as an Important Cultural Property, was built in 1535 (Tenmon 4) by Matsudaira Kiyoyasu, Ieyasu’s grandfather.

About the Important Cultural Property: Daijuji Temple's Ohojo Shoheki-ga (Wall Paintings)

Daijuji Temple, founded in 1475 (Bunmei 7) as the family temple of the Matsudaira clan, suffered a devastating fire in 1855 (Ansei 2) that completely destroyed its main buildings along with the original wall paintings. The temple was rebuilt in 1856 (Ansei 3) on a slightly smaller scale, and the following year, over 140 magnificent wall paintings were created by Reizei Tamechika. The themes of the Tessen-no-Ma (Clematis florida Room), Botan-no-Ma (Peony Room), and Tsuru-no-Ma (Crane Room) follow those of the original Ohojo wall paintings before the fire, rendered in the traditional Kano school style of Chinese-inspired painting (kanga). In contrast, the Jodan-no-Ma (Upper Room) and Gedan-no-Ma (Lower Room) were painted in the yamato-e style, reflecting Japanese artistic traditions. The kanga style, inspired by Chinese Sougen dynasty ink paintings, was a hallmark of the Kano school, which gained prominence as official painters for powerful leaders like Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. During the Edo period, the Kano school served as the official painters of the Tokugawa Shogun. On the other hand, yamato-e is a traditional Japanese painting style that dates back to the Heian period. Characterized by vibrant colors, decorative elements, and a profound appreciation for seasonal nature, yamato-e evokes the elegance and refinement of the imperial court. Reizei Tamechika sought to revive this courtly art form during the late Edo period.
