The Saiku, associated with Ise Jingu Shrine in Mie Prefecture, is the capital of the "Saio," an unmarried imperial princess who served Amaterasu at Ise Jingu Shrine on behalf of the emperor for more than 660 years from the Asuka Period to the end of the Kamakura Period.
Three Heian-period buildings, called "Saikyu-Ryocho," were restored by ancient architecture at the Saiku site in Meiwa-machi, Mie Prefecture, the only place in Japan where Saiku existed, and has been protected as sacred land by the local people.
The Saio, said to have numbered more than 60, spent their days in prayer at the Saiku, away from their families and farewell to their lives in the capital until the Emperor was replaced. Some of them were forbidden to fall in love because they were serving the gods, and some of them had to break up with their lovers.
Three Heian-period buildings, the Saikyu-Ryocho, have been restored at the historic Saikyu site. They convey the charm of ancient architecture and recreate the appearance of the ancient Saiku Palace.
The three buildings are thought to have been used for ceremonies and feasts under the director of the Saikuryo, the Saiku government office. In the background, the world of ancient Heian-period architecture unfolds.
