Greetings,

About The "Ukiyoe Immersive Art Exhibition NAGOYA"

The " Ukiyoe Immersive Art Exhibition NAGOYA " is the first-ever digital art museum project where visitors can immerse themselves in the world of ukiyo-e through a three-dimensional visual space utilizing 3DCG animation and projection mapping. Based on digital data of over 300 works by renowned ukiyo-e artists such as Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Utagawa Hiroshige, Kitagawa Utamaro, Toshusai Sharaku, and Utagawa Kunisada, this exhibition presents a new style of graphical digital art that can be enjoyed by people of all ages.

The masterpieces of ukiyo-e, widely embraced by the common people during the Edo period and continuing to captivate the world even today, are brought to life in a vibrant and dynamic visual space by contemporary artists and creators. Our aim is to create an enjoyable and lively world depicted in ukiyo-e, connecting it to the modern era as a form of pop art.

In addition, we will also exhibit original ukiyo-e prints and reproductions from the Edo period, allowing visitors to appreciate them in contrast with the original composition and colors of ukiyo-e. Line drawings and explanations of ukiyo-e will also be included.

We sincerely hope that through this exhibition, you will feel the charm of ukiyo-e in a familiar way.

Lastly, we would like to express our deepest gratitude to all those who have provided tremendous support for the realization of this exhibition.

Sincerely,

Ukiyoe Immersive Art Exhibition NAGOYA Executive Committee (TV Aichi, HITOHATA,INC., JIJI PRESS, LTD.)

Production of The "Ukiyoe Immersive Art Exhibition NAGOYA"

Producer and General Director: Higashiyama Takeaki (Representative Director of HITOHATA,INC.)

In the world today, there is significant attention on immersive experiential content known as "immersive." With the advancement of digital technology, it has become possible to have high-definition and immersive visual experiences, leading to the acceptance of the exhibition "Immersive Museum," where contemporary artists reconstruct past artistic works with a new sensibility in the form of digital art.

Amidst this backdrop, the present exhibition is a joint project by HITOHATA and TV Aichi, aiming to deliver an unprecedented scale of "Immersive Museum" focusing on the world-renowned ukiyo-e theme.

In the production process, we utilized cutting-edge digital technology to focus on various aspects of the fascination, enjoyment, and beauty of ukiyo-e, aiming to create a digital art space that can be enjoyed by people of all generations.

For example, in the space themed around the acclaimed "Japan Blue" and "Ai" as the central theme, we depicted the flat whale portrayed in Utagawa Kuniyoshi's "Whale Hunting by Miyamoto Musashi" as a three-dimensional CG, dynamically swimming through the space.

Furthermore, in the space themed "Rei," adorned with beauty portraits and flowers, we expanded the backgrounds depicted in the beauty portraits by Kitagawa Utamaro, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, and Utagawa Kunisada, and portrayed graceful women enjoying cherry blossom viewing through motion graphics.

Behind the scenes, we employed various techniques to maximize the charm of ukiyo-e, such as using AI to enhance the digital data of ukiyo-e with higher precision, reproducing the colors of the Edo period, tracing outlines to create line drawings, and utilizing motion sensors to enable interactive movements of ukiyo-e. We also produced a diverse range of content and created intricate three-dimensional visual spaces using over 40 projectors.

Through this exhibition, we hope to provide an opportunity for you to experience the charm, depth, and unexpectedness of ukiyo-e and feel the world of ukiyo-e as an exhilarating form of pop art in your daily life.
