About UNESCO World Heritage Site: Historic Center of San Marino and Mount Titano

Along with Vatican City State, the Republic of San Marino is an independent state located within Italy.

It established a republic in the 13th century and has continued its political system as a free republic from the Middle Ages to the present.

An area of 55 hectares, including the historic center of the capital city of San Marino, has been registered as a World Heritage Site.

The Historic Center of San Marino includes fortress towers, ramparts, gates, defensive bastions, a 19th century neoclassical cathedral and government offices, 14th-16th century monasteries, and the 18th century Titano Theater.

The Historic Center, where citizens still live and work, is the political center of the country, and its location on the towering mountain of Titano has preserved the medieval townscape, unaffected by today's urbanization due to industrial development.
