This was a collaborative exhibition.

About the Ito Family Residence

The Ito Family is a branch of the Kawaito Family, a merchant family in Kiyosugoshi, and served as the official merchant of the Owari Clan during the Edo period.

The residence consists of the main building consisting of the main house, new tatami room, and south tatami room, as well as storehouses, new earthen storehouse, west storehouse, and craft storehouse, etc. These are valuable remains as a typical example of a merchant house that used the water transportation of the Horikawa River to run the family business.

The main house and the front warehouse face Ofunamachi-suji, and the warehouses face Shikamichi, forming a characteristic landscape of the Shikamichi townscape preservation district with townhouses on the west side of the street and warehouses on the east side, and also an extremely important symbol that attracts attention in the townscape.

The main house was completed around 1722, and was designated as a Tangible Cultural Property by Aichi Prefecture in 1987. In 2018, it was designated as an important building in the Nagoya cityscape.
