[Title] From Ukiyo-e to Light: Ukiyo-e Recreated through Immersive Technology
[Dates] Saturday 28 March 2026, 3:00pm–4:30pm (local time)
[Venue] Maison de la Culture du Japon à Paris, Small Hall (101 bis, quai Jacques Chirac 75015 Paris, France)
[Lecture Overview]
From the delicate ukiyo-e prints of Katsushika Hokusai to the spectacular immersive projections created through projection mapping, ukiyo-e transcends time and has been given new life in today’s digital age. As part of the programme accompanying the ‘Passion Japon’ exhibition at La Villette, this lecture will explore the relationship between tradition and innovation, examining how projection mapping breathes new life into the landscapes, expressions and emotions depicted in the ‘Ukiyo’. It can be described as a reflection on the intersection between art history and contemporary sensory experience.
