HITOHATA is not only a creative content studio; we produce the business as a whole. Alongside the planning, direction and production of projection mapping, immersive art museums and immersive shows, we take on business planning, spatial design, system design, IP (intellectual property) development, ticket sales strategy, PR and on-site operations. Our members are involved in the entire process of making a project succeed, deriving the optimal answer at every stage. A structure in which a small core team oversees the whole business while collaborating with specialists is the foundation of the quality HITOHATA delivers.

At HITOHATA each person's scope of work is broad, and quick decisions and judgment are required. From your very first year you are involved in essential work on large-scale projects, in an environment where the way you face your work is reliably reflected in the results. At the same time, this is a world that always competes to be the most advanced and the very best, and that asks for speed in your growth as a professional.

To create one-of-a-kind experiences, we put three capabilities to work. The power to unravel complex challenges logically and drive the business forward. The power to hold deep respect for history and culture while envisioning new forms of expression. And the power to build up steady, precise groundwork and defend the final line of quality. What binds these together firmly is the sense of aesthetics shared by everyone at HITOHATA, which puts the quality of the work first.

HITOHATA is a small organization. This is work where you engage with the whole project from a broad perspective and can truly feel your work reaching many visitors in Japan and overseas, as well as the audience right in front of you. We look forward to entries from those who want to take on the front line, where the experiences you create give rise to real emotion.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

Can I take on work with real responsibility in my first year?

Because HITOHATA runs large-scale projects with a small core team, you take on roles with real responsibility in actual projects as soon as you join. From Grade 3 (Professional) you hold approval authority of up to JPY 50,000 for purchases, JPY 100,000 for outsourcing and JPY 1,000,000 for issuing quotes and invoices, and everyone is issued their own corporate card. Whether you are entrusted with work depends not on seniority but on your results and the maturity of your expertise.

How are evaluation and promotion decided?

Evaluation is not based on seniority; it is an absolute assessment based on your results and the maturity of your expertise. Promotions and base salary revisions take place once a year (July). There is no automatic promotion based on length of service, and depending on your ability you may be promoted to a higher position early. Each job track has a consistent career path from Grade 1 (Assistant) to Grade 8 (Executive / Board Director).

What annual salary can I expect?

For a new graduate (four-year university in Japan, aged 22 on joining), you start from a base salary of JPY 252,800. There is no fixed overtime allowance; overtime, holiday work and late-night work allowances are paid in full, calculated by the minute. Estimated annual salary, calculated from base salary plus bonuses (FY2024 actual: 4.0 months of base salary), is from JPY 4.04 million, and the model annual salary including housing allowance, overtime allowances and business-trip per diem is approximately JPY 5.16 million (both for a full year of employment). Base salary is revised each July according to results and evaluation, and your pay rises when you are promoted.

How is my assignment decided?

You choose your job track when you apply (Director; Planner / Marketer / Manager; Designer / Artist; Creator / Engineer; Operator / Concierge; Curator / Presenter). Your specific duties and the projects you work on are decided after you join, based on your aptitude, the company's situation and your own wishes. Changing to another job track after joining is also possible. The Dancer / Performer track is recruited separately by audition and is not part of this choice.

What is the difference between the Concierge role and the Curator / Presenter track?

The Concierge role is responsible for the visitor experience itself: reception, guidance and guest service, handling groups and media, and safety and on-site operations. The Curator / Presenter track is responsible for the works themselves: researching and selecting works on show, negotiating loans and purchases, writing interpretation, and presenting and selling works in the gallery. The two stand side by side in the same museum, but the former faces the visitor and the latter faces the work.

What does the Operator role involve?

The Operator role belongs to the same Operator / Concierge track as the Concierge role, but the work is different. Operators run performances and screenings at immersive shows, cruise ship theaters and permanent museums, operating video, sound and lighting to protect the quality of every show and exhibition. While the Concierge role centers on guest service and guidance, the Operator role centers on running the stage and technical equipment. Both can aim for higher grades within the same career path.

Are there transfers or relocations?

For office / studio roles, the Nagoya head office is your main place of work in the first year for both new graduates and mid-career hires, with business trips in Japan and overseas as projects progress. For museum / theater roles, your main place of work is the museum or cruise ship you are assigned to. For COMPANY MEMBERs (full-time employees), in future, depending on your aptitude and the projects you are on, transfer to our Tokyo, Osaka or Milan offices or to other museums is possible. When a transfer or secondment is considered, we take full account of your working and family circumstances and respect your wishes in reaching a decision. PROJECT MEMBERs (contract employees) and ASSOCIATE MEMBERs (part-time staff) are employed for a specific work location, so there are no transfers (unless promoted to COMPANY MEMBER).

What is the difference between a COMPANY MEMBER (full-time employee) and a PROJECT MEMBER (contract employee)?

A COMPANY MEMBER (full-time employee) has no fixed term of employment and is a permanent hire responsible for driving the business over the long term. A PROJECT MEMBER (contract employee) is employed for a defined project period and scope, and based on results and evaluation can aim to become a COMPANY MEMBER (full-time employee). Both are covered by social insurance, allowances and flextime, and the starting grade is determined based on experience and achievements. There is no difference in the criteria for evaluation or promotion, and depending on results and the maturity of their expertise a PROJECT MEMBER (contract) may be promoted sooner than a COMPANY MEMBER (full-time).

Can INTERN MEMBERs (interns) or ASSOCIATE MEMBERs (part-time staff) become PROJECT MEMBERs (contract) or COMPANY MEMBERs (full-time employees)?

INTERN MEMBERs (interns) and PROJECT MEMBERs (contract) have gone on to join us as COMPANY MEMBERs (full-time employees). Because promotion is based on results and evaluation rather than age or length of service, how you approach your work leads directly to becoming a full-time employee.
ASSOCIATE MEMBERs (part-time staff) and INTERN MEMBERs (interns) can also be promoted to PROJECT MEMBER (contract), so you may first join as a PROJECT MEMBER (contract) and then aim to become a COMPANY MEMBER (full-time employee).

Can I be promoted while staying a part-time member?

Yes. Grades are separate from employment type, so you can be promoted to Grade 3 (Professional) and Grade 4 (Senior) while remaining an ASSOCIATE MEMBER (part-time), and your hourly pay is revised in line with your grade. Switching to contract or full-time employment is a separate decision based on your own wishes and on results and evaluation; it is not a condition for promotion.

Can new graduates apply for mid-career openings? Can I apply for several positions at once?

Yes to both. Mid-career hiring has no age or career-history requirements, so new graduates are welcome to apply. New graduate hiring and mid-career hiring follow separate selection processes, so please apply to whichever suits your situation. Even if you cannot join before graduating, we will take your aptitude into consideration. If you are applying for several positions at the same time, please note this in the applicant's notes section of your documents and in your application email.

I am a foreign national living outside Japan. Can I apply, and will you support my visa (status of residence) application?

Yes, you can apply. If we hire you as a COMPANY MEMBER (full-time employee) or PROJECT MEMBER (contract employee), we will support you in obtaining a status of residence that allows you to work in Japan. For applicants living outside Japan, the process is as follows.
1. Selection: After document screening, you can take your interviews online. All interviews are conducted in Japanese.
2. Offer and employment contract: After you accept our offer, we will sign an employment contract and ask you to submit the documents required for the application (such as a copy of your passport, an ID photo, your graduation certificate, your résumé, and proof of your Japanese ability).
3. Certificate of Eligibility (COE): We will apply for your COE at the Regional Immigration Services Bureau (there is no application fee). The review usually takes one to three months.
4. Receiving the COE: Once your COE is issued, we will send it to you by email.
5. Visa application: Apply for a visa at the Japanese embassy or consulate in your country or region, presenting your COE. With a COE, the visa review usually takes about five business days.
6. Entering Japan: Please enter Japan within three months of the date your COE was issued. At major airports, your residence card is issued when you enter Japan.
7. After arrival: Within 14 days of settling on your place of residence, register your address at your local municipal office. We will also help you find housing (recommended areas and properties, and introductions to real estate agents).
You can use the relocation allowance (JPY 200,000) for the costs of moving to Japan, such as your flight and the initial costs of renting a home. Please note that the status of residence is granted by the Immigration Services Agency of Japan after a review that considers factors such as how your education and work history relate to the job, so depending on your background and the position, it may not be granted. We will adjust your start date to the timing of the permission.
ASSOCIATE MEMBER (part-time staff) and INTERN MEMBER (intern) positions are open only to applicants who are already permitted to work in Japan (including those with permission to engage in activities other than those permitted under their status of residence).

How much Japanese do I need?

All work at HITOHATA, from communication inside and outside the company to writing proposals and descriptions, is done in Japanese. For applicants whose native language is not Japanese, we therefore require Japanese ability equivalent to N2 or above on the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT): roughly, being able to read and understand newspaper articles and work documents and follow the main points of conversations at close to natural speed. All interviews are conducted in Japanese, and we assess your Japanese ability during them.
If you live outside Japan and need to obtain a status of residence, the immigration review may require proof of your Japanese ability, so please submit a document certifying that you have passed JLPT N2 or higher, or a score report showing 400 points or more on the BJT Business Japanese Proficiency Test. If you have not yet obtained one, please let us know when you plan to take the test (the JLPT is held every July and December, and only once a year in some cities outside Japan).
After joining, we ask you to keep studying with the goal of reaching N1-equivalent Japanese: understanding logically complex writing and specialized content, and natural-speed conversation in a wide range of situations. This is because many tasks, such as explaining works to visitors and partners and writing proposals and descriptions, require more advanced Japanese.
